Vader is about as safe a first bet as LEGO could make. If it sells the way the format's prior releases have, a pipeline of iconic licensed characters seems like the natural next step. The format now has the credibility to become a genuine licensed collection in its own right.

The Fortnite theme started with smaller, accessible sets and has been scaling up with each wave. The 1,963-piece Rave Cave at $229.99 is a meaningful step: that puts it squarely in territory where sets are bought as display pieces or collector items, not casual additions. The digital unlock component gives it something purely physical LEGO sets can't match. How the Rave Cave performs will likely determine how far LEGO pushes the premium range of this partnership going forward.

The challenge of serving both kids and adult fans within the same theme is not new. Ninjago's answer in its 15th anniversary year is Legends: a clearly demarcated sub-line with higher complexity, higher prices, and display orientation, running alongside the mainline play sets. It solves the segmentation problem cleanly without muddying the core brand. The question is whether other long-running themes, from City to Harry Potter, take notes. Two-tier theme architecture is a model worth watching.
