A century, a Dark Knight, and a summer's worth of Star Wars questions

Today breaks into three moods: heartfelt tribute, game launch, Star Wars skepticism. Sir David Attenborough's 100th birthday earns a one-time change to LEGO's most-cited age label. Legacy of the Dark Knight rides Seal's 'Kiss from a Rose' into May 22. The summer Star Wars wave is drawing pointed questions about upscaled figures.

LEGO's age label hits 100 for Sir David Attenborough's birthday

LEGO's iconic '4 to 99' age label has a new upper limit. Sir David Attenborough turned 100 this year, and LEGO marked it by updating select packaging to read '4 to 100,' a one-time tribute to the naturalist who had inadvertently been aged out by LEGO's own label. Brick Fanatics and Bricks Fanz both confirmed the change.

Minty Take

This is LEGO at its most endearing: a tiny, consequence-free gesture that landed perfectly because the story behind it is genuinely lovely. Sir David Attenborough is, quite possibly, the one person alive who could make LEGO rethink its own label. The real question is whether it goes back to 99 after his birthday.

LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight launches May 22, with 'Kiss from a Rose'

The launch trailer for LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight is out, set to Seal's 'Kiss from a Rose' from Batman Forever. The game releases May 22 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, with 72-hour early access for Deluxe Edition pre-orders from May 19. Brick Fanatics has a behind-the-scenes look at the story's creative process.

Minty Take

Setting the launch trailer to 'Kiss from a Rose' is doing a lot of work. That song belongs to Batman Forever, to Joel Schumacher's deliberately unserious Batman, which is precisely the register LEGO Batman inhabits. It's a declaration of intent: this game knows what it is, and it's not trying to out-Arkham Arkham.

LEGO Star Wars Up-Scaled Darth Vader Minifigure 75461, oversized buildable figure

Summer 2026 Star Wars: upscaled Vader, a pricey Shuttle, and pointed questions

The summer 2026 Star Wars wave is drawing pointed reactions. MandRproductions argues the upscaled Darth Vader figure misses the mark and the new $140 Imperial Shuttle falls short of its 2015 predecessor. The AT-RT Driver Helmet set arrives without a minifigure. Brick Fanatics notes the upscaled format is expanding across LEGO themes broadly.

Minty Take

The upscaled format worked for helmets because the format was new. Vader brings decades of minifigure history into the comparison, and a $140 Shuttle critics find underwhelming next to 2015 frames the same problem. Star Wars fans have long memories. The summer wave is stress-testing whether the format holds in that context.

Trend Watch

The upscaled figure format is taking over

Buildable and upscaled figures started as specialty items: helmet sets, large-scale busts, the occasional character build. The format has been expanding steadily, and with Star Wars now in the mix, Brick Fanatics reports no theme appears off-limits. The upscaled Vader is the first real stress test. If the format holds in Star Wars, it holds anywhere.

The community is already improving Smart Play

Smart Play sets launched earlier this year to a mixed reception. Community modders on Rebrickable have since produced modifications for the Millennium Falcon and X-Wing that, according to RacingBrick's testing, improve both looks and functionality without extra parts. The gap between launch product and community-improved product is narrowing fast. Whether that signals a format that invites iteration, or one that shipped too early, is worth watching.

LEGO is drawing clearer lines between fans and resellers

The April BrickLink terms update drew an unusually sharp line between personal fans and commercial sellers. The May clarification pulled it back: store ownership alone isn't the concern. Large-scale commercial point redemption is. LEGO is navigating a tension built into its Insiders program from the start. The fact a clarifying email was needed within a month suggests the first draft of the policy got the line wrong.
