From Poké Balls to Barrels: LEGO's Nintendo Universe Keeps Growing

Two Nintendo stories surfaced today, neither of them scheduled reveals. Leaked packaging confirms three Smart Brick-enabled Pokémon play sets for August, and LEGO dropped a Donkey Kong teaser with a barrel-rolling animation and zero prior warning. Disney Main Street USA landed to mixed reactions; Spider-Man's Brand New Day wave hits review season.

Three Pokémon Smart Brick Play Sets Leak for August

The Smart Brick expansion of LEGO's Pokémon line arrived via the accidental route: a Belgian retailer posted product images early, and three unrevealed play sets are now public. Per StoneWars, the sets are due in August with Smart Play compatibility. Set names and pricing remain unconfirmed.

Minty Take

The first LEGO Pokémon wave was display builds for collectors. Smart Brick play sets are a different tier, aimed younger and interactive. If this wave lands, LEGO has a full Pokémon range: collector pieces at the top, connected play at the base. That's a complete product strategy on one of the biggest IPs in the world.

LEGO Donkey Kong Teaser Drops With Zero Warning

No leaks, no rumors: LEGO's own social channels dropped a Donkey Kong teaser Thursday with a barrel-rolling animation and the tagline 'Rolling Soon.' Jay's Brick Blog notes it may connect to DK's classic arcade debut. After a Super Mario cameo, this looks like a standalone theme.

Minty Take

LEGO's Nintendo partnership started with Super Mario, then expanded to Pokémon. A standalone Donkey Kong theme, separate from the Mario line, says this is becoming a Nintendo franchise strategy. The barrel-rolling teaser with no prior leaks is also notable: LEGO orchestrated a proper surprise, which has become genuinely rare.

Nintendo's LEGO Universe Is Expanding Beyond Mario

Super Mario arrived in 2020. Pokémon followed in 2025 with a different product model: high piece count, display builds, collector buyers. Donkey Kong now surfaces as a third approach. The momentum is clear. If LEGO and Nintendo keep expanding franchise by franchise, the community will immediately start speculating about which major Nintendo IP comes next.

The Disney Park Set Is Now a Category, Not a One-Off

LEGO's Disney park sub-line now runs three large sets, with Main Street USA (43302) the latest: 3,899 pieces, $400, June 1. Promobricks counts six Disney park-inspired LEGO sets total since 2016. The mixed reaction to Main Street confirms that fan expectations for the format are still calibrating. LEGO has committed to the category; now it has to manage what fans expect from it.

Big GWPs, Rising Standards: Fans Want More at $400

Minas Tirith (11377) shipped with Grond as its GWP, and the debate is live again. Building Together traced why LEGO Lord of the Rings GWPs have been contentious: scale, representation, value. The broader pattern: as LEGO flagship sets push toward $400, the GWP becomes a value signal, and the community is holding each one to a higher standard.
