This Week Everybody's Catching Something

Five months into the theme, Pokémon graduates to minifigure scale: a Poké Ball diorama with Red and Professor Oak, plus an oversized Rayquaza and Arcanine leading the August wave. Insiders Days runs alongside with its own reward structure, a Sea Serpent GWP reviving a 1992 Castle set and double points across eight themes.

The 2,386-piece, $299.99 Poké Ball diorama debuts Trainer minifigures for Red and Professor Oak alongside single-molded Pikachu and Eevee figures, while Rayquaza, Arcanine, and Munchlax round out an August 1 wave. The Poké Ball and an oversized buildable Red follow October 1.

Minty Take

The reception split is telling: praise for finally getting Trainer minifigures, skepticism about Pikachu and Eevee arriving as single-molded pieces instead of the usual printed minifigs. LEGO's compromise, more sculptural detail, less customization, previews the tension every future creature-heavy license will face.

LEGO Ideas Sea Serpent 40912 product image, the 2026 Insiders Days gift-with-purchase remake of the 1992 Black Knights ship

LEGO Insiders Days Returns With Sea Serpent GWP and Double Points

LEGO's annual loyalty week runs July 7-12, and this year's marquee gift is a fan-designed one: the 241-piece Sea Serpent revives a 1992 Castle set through the LEGO Ideas program, available with purchases over $180. A second GWP, the airplane, unlocks at $100 on Creator, City, or Friends sets, alongside double points across eight themes & 4x points on a single set, Maersk Dual-Fuel Container Vessel 40955.

Minty Take

Sourcing the GWP from LEGO Ideas is smart: it rewards a fan design instead of another corporate afterthought, and nostalgia for the 1992 original does real work driving the $180 threshold. But the FOMO structure is exactly the sort of promo mechanic drawing pushback lately. Reward and pressure, same six days, and overall a weaker Insider Days than last year.

Reviewers Praise Sea Serpent's Nostalgia, Note Its Cut Corners
Four reviews of the 40912 Sea Serpent GWP find a faithful callback to the 1992 original, though The Brick Fan flags the drop from five minifigures to two and a printed sail replacing the original's brick-built version as concessions to keep costs down.

Trend Watch

Pokémon Hit Minifigures Faster Than Most Licenses

LEGO Pokémon launched in March with oversized creature builds, added SMART Play interactivity last month, and now has minifigures five months in, with two more waves already dated for August and October. Most licensed themes take years to earn minifigure treatment. If this cadence holds, Pokémon could be LEGO's fastest-scaling license yet.

Fans Are Pushing Back on LEGO's Promo Culture

Two videos this week land the same punch from different angles: Stud City refuses to open 'exclusive' Insiders promos on principle, and Held der Steine's catalog breakdown asks whether licenses are crowding out original creativity. Neither is a boycott, but both read as early friction with how LEGO is packaging scarcity and IP into its second-half calendar.

LEGO's Artist Collabs Might Just Be Starting

The five-set Olivia Rodrigo collection is LEGO's most prominent music-artist collaboration yet, and Brick Fanatics is already pitching who's next. That's usually a sign the format worked internally. Watch whether LEGO Editions, the sub-line built for this kind of pairing, gets a second artist announcement before year's end.

BrickLink's Designer Program Keeps Rewriting Its Own Rules

Since the 2018 AFOL Designer Program, BrickLink's format has cycled through Rounds, Series, and now Waves, with max quantities climbing from 5,000 to 30,000-plus and a new one-selection-per-year cap. The 2028 wave narrows further to two Castle factions. The program keeps optimizing itself; whether that stabilizes it or just adds more rules is the open question.
