Batman Turns 20 As LEGO's Bookshelf Drops The License

LEGO's book nook collection makes its first move without a license, betting the format itself can carry a set. Batman's 20th anniversary gets the opposite treatment: a full promotional stack of free bust events, a polybag and bonus points. Two different kinds of confidence from one company.

Lego Book Nook

LEGO's Book Nook Series Ditches the License

LEGO's book nook collection tries something new: no license. The 1,690-piece Bookshop opens into a two-story interior with a spiral staircase, reading nooks and hidden literary nods, following entries built around Sherlock Holmes, The Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter. It lists October 1 for $149.99 / £119.99 / €129.99.

Minty Take

Book nooks started as a hedge: 40698 Books Are My Passion, a LEGO Ideas GWP that sold out almost instantly and proved the appetite existed before LEGO committed to licensed spinoffs. Going unlicensed here says the format is the draw now, not the IP stitched onto it. That's confidence in an idea over a brand.

LEGO Batman Day Brings Free Busts, Polybag And Points

LEGO marks Batman's 20th LEGO anniversary with a stacked September: a free Make & Take Batman Bust event lands in stores across the UK, Europe and North America (UK and Ireland kick off September 19 at 10am), a free Batman polybag is confirmed for the month, and a Bruce Wayne minifigure GWP arrives September 9 alongside double points on select sets.

Minty Take

Twenty years since LEGO first put a Batsuit in a set, and the anniversary push comes as four small incentives stacked into one month: a free bust, a polybag, a minifigure GWP and double points. That reads as a loyalty play, built to pull collectors into stores repeatedly rather than once.

Trend Watch

LEGO Ideas' Review Pipeline Keeps Growing

92 projects cleared the second 2026 review this week, and the third review is already opening with a sitcom-and-story pairing. Add a new Haunted Halloween contest built to seed the next supporter wave, and the review calendar starts to look like a continuous pipeline rather than three discrete annual events. Expect the backlog to keep outpacing what LEGO can actually greenlight.

Brick Building Catches Console Nostalgia Fever

LEGO's 1:1 PlayStation lands the same week Mattel readies a rival Xbox brick set, turning a retro-hardware trend into an actual rivalry. Pair that with the Astro Bot GWP tie-in and this reads like LEGO treating gaming hardware the way it already treats movie props: a licensable, collectible category of its own. More consoles are a safe bet.

2026 Is Shaping Up As LEGO's Anniversary Year

Ninjago's Legacy line marked its 15th anniversary earlier this year with two remakes, and now Batman gets a 20th-anniversary push stacking a free bust, polybag and GWP into one month. Two unrelated themes, the same playbook: anniversaries as an excuse for layered promotions rather than single hero sets. Watch for the next milestone theme to get the same treatment.
